The Immigrant Health Care 101 website was created to bring light to disparities in healthcare delivery as they apply to new immigrant groups in St Louis. Specific focus is centered on the Ukrainian, Afghan, and Bosnian populations because of the recent influx of refugees from these areas due to wars, genocide, and/or persecution. They have been especially vulnerable to inequalities in care secondary to language, cultural, medical, and support services as a result of gaps in intercultural knowledge of medical professionals providing their care. The goal of this website is to give these populations quick access to educational material that will aid their physicians in delivering high quality, comprehensive healthcare tailored to their specific needs.
Hi, I'm Nadia Ummer. My interest in anthropology (cultural, biological, and medical) led me to this project. I believe that approaching healthcare from an ethnomedical perspective can reap major benefits in overall health outcomes. I hope to continue similar work as a college student in the coming years.
